Event Description

Hello OrlandoJUG!

Tonight is our monthly OJUG meeting. I'm just back from a very exciting conference called OSCON - the O'Reilly Open Source Conference in Portland, OR.

I'm going to go over what I learned at OSCON tonight and hit on some current trends I became aware of at the conference.
There were thousands of people at the conference. Plus, there were about 10 tracks which equated to 10 talks per hour, 8 hours a day for 5 days! Overwhelming? Nah - it was exciting and a bunch of fun. I learned so much about current trends in computing. And, the after-events - the BOF's (birds of a feather sessions) and the mixers were informative, as well.
I made lots of new contacts, learned enough to keep my grey matter hopping for a long time, and can't wait to convey all I can to you.
So, please RSVP so I'll know how much pizza to order - I look forward to seeing many of you tonight. And, please don't hesitate to invite our friends and colleagues.
All the best,
Michael Levin
Chairman, OrlandoJUG

Learning from Embedded Software Development for the Space Shuttle and the Orion MPCV

Software development is much different today than it was at the beginning of the Space Shuttle era because of the tools that we have. But the art and practice of software engineering has not progressed that much since the early days of software development. Compilers are much better and faster, and debuggers are now integrated into development tools, making the task of error detection easier.
