Some initial impressions from Android development

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 6:29pm 0 Comments

I recently got to do some Android programming, and I'd like to share some of what I learned. A few things strike you the moment you start developing for Android devices.

    1. It is Java

    2. Layouts are done with XML

    3. Android 'pages', or activities are automonous entities.

Well, strictly speaking, these assertions are not 100% correct. Let me elaborate on each…

Java applets on android tablets

Posted on December 12, 2010 at 1:42pm 0 Comments

Does anyone own one of the android java-based tablets? If you do, how does it compare to an iPad, and does it properly run java applets and applications? Do you need to install everything through a 'store', similar to the iTunes app store?

Hey, Kevin:

Congrats on starting the new adventure, your job coding Ruby!

Re:"A message from Kevin Neelands to all members of Ruby Town on CodeTown!

Just starting with Ruby on Rails.  I found one I.D.E. called JetBrains RubyMine, and I'm trying to install the Dynamic Language ToolKit in Eclipse.  Does anyone have suggestions for the best I.D.E?

Visit Ruby Town at:

This question would be better posted as a Codetown Discussion in the Ruby Town group so everyone could benefit from the responses. FYI, activity in a Discussion gets emailed to all members of the umbrella Group it's posted in.

Plus, all Codetown members will see the posting in Codetown's activity log.

Article: Time-Series Storage: Design Choices That Shape Cost and Performance

Every time-series database makes a set of storage design decisions: how to lay out rows, when to compress, what to partition on. These decisions determine cost and query performance more than the choice of database itself. This article works through those fundamentals from first principles, using widely available tools like PostgreSQL and Apache Parquet to make each trade-off measurable.

Copy Fail and Dirty Frag: Linux Page-Cache Exploits Target Every Major Distribution

Two recent Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been disclosed: Copy Fail (CVE-2026-31431) on April 29, 2026, and Dirty Frag (CVE-2026-43284 and CVE-2026-43500) on May 7, 2026. Both allow local users to gain root access, affecting multiple Linux distributions. These vulnerabilities exploit flaws in the page cache via different subsystems, necessitating immediate patching by affected organizations.
