Event Description

Please note, this month's meeting is not at Devry!

Join us at the OrlandoJUG May 27th for a presentation on Gradle, the new build tool that does far more than Ant and Maven, but is much more powerful and easier. Jim Moore will give the presentation.

Abstract:
Building on last month's talk about Git, this session will show about the evolution of build-management tool support. We'll briefly look at the "old school" tools that developers in the Java community are usually familiar with, particularly Ant and Maven. Then we'll see what the current generation of build-management lets you do.

Gradle is a powerful open-source implementation of this class of tool, but one of their most important points of this talk is to change and expand how we think about how build, configuration management, deployment, etc. should work. (Note: This will be primarily a demo-driven talk.)

Speaker Bio:
Jim Moore is the Executive Director of Platform Engineering at Canoe Ventures. He has many years of experience with delivering solutions at all layers of the software stack, from code-monkey to tech-lead to consultant to executive management (and still tries to be a code-monkey when possible). He's repeatedly learned the value of tools that support developers, instead of trying to make developers conform to the workflows of the tools.

Please RSVP so we'll know how much food to order. Networking starts at 6:00, and the presentation will start at 7:00. Please feel free to invite a friend using the Codetown Invite feature. We're looking forward to seeing you!

What Testers Can Do to Ensure Software Security

A secure software development life cycle means baking security into plan, design, build, test, and maintenance, rather than sprinkling it on at the end, Sara Martinez said in her talk Ensuring Software Security. Testers aren’t bug finders but early defenders, building security and quality in from the first sprint. Culture first, automation second, continuous testing and monitoring all the way.
