Hi Gatorjuggies!
We had a PaaS presentation planned for this month's meeting, but it looks like it's going to be September instead. So, stay tuned for that.
Meanwhile, let's all take a breather until September since many of us are out of town.
Please keep an eye on Codetown for updates on summer news and conferences. I'm making last minute plans for OSCON and I have discount codes for you if you want to go.
=================
We have a lot to talk about this month:
Upcoming conferences - among others, ever have an itch to visit Ukraine? Well, if you have a nice talk, the JUG in Lviv will pay your travel expenses! There's a Java conference in Krakow June 9. JavaOne is in September and we have discount codes for you. OSCON is in Portland in July (discount codes also available).
Job opportunities - there are several interesting opportunities to explore.
Technology - Let's have a roundtable discussion about your favorite technologies, open spaces style. I want to talk about Map Reduce and Big Data.
Also, Julie in beautiful Prague at JetBrains, the company behind products like Idea, the powerful Java IDE, is going to give us a free license to raffle off. http://www.jetbrains.com
And, there's more!
This will be an interesting meeting, to be sure. So, please RSVP so we'll know how much pizza to order. Feel free to invite a friend.
As always, I hope to see you there.
All the best,
Michael Levin
Codetown is a social network. It's got blogs, forums, groups, personal pages and more! You might think of Codetown as a funky camper van with lots of compartments for your stuff and a great multimedia system, too! Best of all, Codetown has room for all of your friends.

It allows developers to define workflows programmatically using languages such as Java, Go, Python, C#/.NET, eliminating the need for specialized DSLs.
By Diogo CarletoIn a recent paper, Microsoft researchers described BitNet b1.58 2B4T, the first LLM to be natively trained using "1-bit" (technically, 1-trit) weights, rather than being quantized from a model trained with floating point weights. According to Microsoft, the model delivers performance comparable to full-precision LLMs of similar size at a fraction of the computation cost and hardware requirements.
By Sergio De SimoneInnovative cloud solutions expert Somtochi Onyekwere recently presented at QCon London 2025, unveiling Corrosion—Fly.io's advanced open-source distributed system. By leveraging CRDTs and Rust, Corrosion enhances scalability and data synchronization, addressing latency challenges and ensuring rapid, consistent application deployment across a global network of 40+ regions.
By Steef-Jan WiggersAWS recently announced an enhanced CLI (command-line interface) agent for Amazon Q Developer with advanced agentic capabilities. This upgrade allows developers to work with AI directly in their terminal. Meanwhile, Anthropic has launched Claude Code as a research preview. It is a terminal-based coding assistant that allows developers to work directly with Claude from the command line.
By Matt SaundersRashmi Venugopal explores the inevitability of legacy systems in successful companies and the importance of transforming legacy systems to accelerate innovation. Rashmi discusses various strategies to tackle such technical renovation initiatives, like evolutionary architecture, deprecation-driven development, and intentional organization design.
