Gainesville Events - Grails Web Application in 30 minutes.
Presenter: Nem Nesic
Since "discovering" Grails almost 4 years ago I've been using it for
all of my Java projects. While Java syntax is acceptable when working
with Grails, Groovy is recommended. For me Groovy is everything that
Java is plus more, much more.
Gainesville Events was developed as a back-end app for an android app
called gEvents. gEvents allows users to browse Gainesville social
events on their android device.
It is a simple CRUD application with publicly exposed READ API for
accessing events.
In my presentation I would like to go over basics of Grails and then
re-write Gainesville Events web app.
I also want to show audience how to easily parse XML documents. (I
pre-load Gainesville Events by parsing GainesvilleSun events RSS
feeds).
And I will use Twitter Bootstrap CSS framework as well.
If we have time, I would also like to show how to deploy the app to
the appfog.org in 5 minutes.
Bio:
I was born and raised in Serbia. I moved to the US in 2002 as a
foreign exchange student. In 2003 I enrolled at Santa Fe College.
That's where I learned about Java and the WORA (Write once, run
anywhere) concept. That sounded promising so I invested days and
nights into learning Java. After graduating Santa Fe in 2006 with the
AAS degree in Programming Analysis I enrolled at St. Pete College
where I got my BAS in Technology Management. While working on my BAS i
was working at Santa Fe as Java developer. Soon after that I got a job
as Java/Grails developer for Tower Hill Ins Group in
Gainesville.
Then my parents convinced me to get my Masters. I went to Nova South
Eastern University. I graduated in 2011 with MS in Computer Science -
Computer Programming track.
Besides working full time I also spend time time doing consulting work
for various companies/industries including Florida Department for
Children and Families, sport centers around the country, dental
industry, etc.
Last year (2011) I decided to quit my day job and start doing full
time consulting work. Consulting work allowed me to play with
different frameworks and technologies. I primarily work with
Java/Grails but I also know PHP, and I am familiar with android
development.
